働くことになる。今日はオーストラリア人のベスと一緒に仕事。このベス、唇やミミにピアスをしまくっていて、かなり見
かけがパンクな女の子。バイトするのに見かけなど特に気にしないのがやはりイギリスである。
ベスは、六ヶ月前店が開店した当時からのベテランである。彼女の話によると、バーミンガムに電車で着いたその日、
エスカレーターを上がりそのすぐ横にあるうちの店を見るとすぐさま「働かせてくれ」と言ったらしい。ピアスを開けまっくったこの
ロックな彼女を見たハージットさんは初めかなり引いたらしいが、ベス、「オーストラリアのサブウェイで働いたことがある」と主張。
この「経験」という言葉に、イギリス人は弱い。疑い深いハージットさん、確かめるため「パンを切れ」と命令したらしい。ベスは
すかさず持ち前のテクニックで、「シュッ」っと切って見せ見事合格。「明日から来い」と言われたそうな。
面白いのは、ベスはサブウェイの仕事が決まった後にバーミンガムに住むこと自体を決めたことである。べス、只者でないな。
Mr Plant is growing steadily. However, I found some little greenish insects eating his body, so I rescued him by washing
all the leaves.
I spent my morning uneasily, waiting for a call from Harjit. As expected, he called and told me to work from half past two.
Today was with Beth, an Austrarian girl who looks rather punky as she has earrings and liprings all over. Had this been in
Japan, she will never be allowed to work I thought.
There's an interesting anecdote relating to this girl Beth. As she arrived at the Station, up the escalator, she saw the
vacancy sign from our shop. Not wasting any time, she went in with her earings and liprings all over and said
'Can I work here?'. Harjit, taken aback a little, asked whether she ever had worked at subway. In fact she did have the
experience, but sceptical Harjit was, told Beth to cut some bread for him. Beth, in her usual manner, demonstrated him
the perfect skill and was told to start working from tomorrow.
The interesting part of her story was, she decided to live in Birmingham after she got the job. Beth, an extraordinary girl.
