ロンドンに来た
一週間前突然Kenjiからメールがあり、ロンドンで待ち合わせの約束をした。
「着いたら電話する」と言ってたが、なかなかこない。
代わりに、水曜日面接をしてもらったマネージャーから電話がかかってきた。心臓がドキっとした。
「XXXのものですが」
「あっこんにちは．．．お元気ですか？」
「ええ、元気よ」
（沈黙）
「えー、今日はどのようなご用件で？」
「ジェネラル・アカウンティングのポジションにオッファーをしたいのだけど」
「それはいわゆる、仕事のオッファーですか？」
「ええ、そうよ」
「センキュー！センキューベリーマッチ！」
ということで、仕事が遂に決まった。
神様に感謝の一言です。
夜７時過ぎ、Kenjiから予想よりも３時間遅く電話が掛かってきた。
大雪で出発が３時間遅れたそうだ。でも連絡がついてよかった。
８時半にラッセル・スクエアで待ち合わせる。弟のShinjiにも会った。
思えばKenjiとは、１年半まえ京王線の電車の中で
「又いつか会おう」と握手を交わした以来だ。
それが昨日のように思えた。
中華街で晩飯を一緒に食べる。
この１年半、積もりに積もった話題をビール片手に少しずつ溶かしていった。
Came to London
Got an e-mail from Kenji a week ago, saying that he wants to meet up in London.
He was suppose to call me as soon as he arrived, but...
Instead, the manager whom I had an interview with on Wednesday called me.
"Hello I'm xxx from XXX, is this Maki?"
"Yes.... ummm how are you?"
"I'm well thank you"
(silence)
"So... what's the issue today?"
"I would like to offer you the general accounting position"
"Is this the so called job offer?"
"Yes"
"oh thank you thank you thank you"
And that's how I got the job at last.
Thank you God!
Sometime past seven, Kenji finally called me.
He said he was stranded in Narita airport for 3 hours, because of the snow.
It was so nice to speak to him. We arranged to meet at Russel Square at eight thirty.
It was in the train a year and a half ago when we last said goodbye.
Kenji went to Arizona and I came to UK.
Met Kenji's brother Shinji as well.
Went to the China Town to have dinner.
And went to the pub afterwards and chatted for a long long time.
