"When Gregor Samsa woke one morning from uneasy dreams, he found himself transformed in his bed into a monstrous insect" (Franz Kafka, Metamorphosis)
午後、バーミンガムの中央図書館に行き、予約をしておいた本をとってきた。
そのまま、図書館の近くにあるスターバックに入り、アールグレイを注文して、その本を読んだ。
本はフランツ・カフカの「変身」という、短編小説だ。
大きな解釈を要する本だ。
カフカの本を読んだのはこれが初めてなので、彼のことを僕は知らない。
でも本に解釈を与えるのは誰でもできると思う。
もちろん、作者が書いた他の本や伝記などを読めば尚良い解釈ができるだろうけれど、
「変身」でカフカは、様々な解釈ができる、十分なスペースを残していると思う。
僕はフラットのキッチンで、自分なりの解釈を本に与えようと考えた。
まず、本が悲しい話なのか幸せな話なのか決めようと思った。
けれど、それは意外と難しく結局諦めた。多分両方だろうという結論に達した。
ひとつ大きなテーマとして、「独立」という考えが頭に浮かんだ。
グレゴールが虫に変身する前は、とても独立した人だった。
それに対して彼の家族は彼が家に持ち帰ってくる収入に頼っていた。
しかし、変身後、その関係が逆転した。かれは家族の保護なしでは生きられなくなってしまったのだ。
さて、グレゴールの独立した時に焦点を当てると、
もしかしたら、作者は「独立している人」に栄誉を送りたかったのではないだろうか。
（もしかしたら、カフカ自身独立していて、人に頼られることに疲れを覚えていたのかもしれない。）
カフカはこれを逆説的な方法で実行した。
つまり、独立化した人を虫にして、それに頼っていた人がどう反応するか、リアルに再現しようとしたのだ。
家族は突如、経済的危機に陥り、父親はもはや家でだらだらしてはいられなくなり、仕事を探さなくてはいけなくなった。
母親は、子供が持ち帰った安定した収入があった日々を懐かしく思った。
よって、家族は再び、「過去の良い日」にたいして、感謝を抱くようになったのだ。
しかし、家族のメンバーも少しづつ、変身していく。独立していくわけだ。
カフカは読者に、だから僕たちも大人になって、一人で物事を考えなくてはいけないんだと訴えたかったのではないだろうか。
そして、既に独立した人に対しては、すこし後ろに下がって（虫になって）、
周りの人を成長させてあげることが大切なんだと伝えたかったのかもしれない。
In the afternoon, I went to Birmingham Central Library to collect a book that I was reserving.
Then, I went into Starbucks, ordered an Earl Grey and read this book.
It was a short novel called Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka.
It was a book that required a great interpretation.
I don't know much about Kafka as this book was in fact my very first book written by him.
But I think everybody can give interpretation to books without not knowing much about the author.
Of course, it is better if you can read some other books written by the same author or read his biography,
but then, I realised that Kafka left an ample space in this book, for it to be interpreted in various ways.
So, after I finished reading the book, I hastily went back to my flat, and contemplated in the kitchen, what kind of interpretation I could give to this book.
First, I tried to determine whether the book was a happy story or a sad story.
This proved difficult, as it could be both. Yes, it could be both, was my conclusion.
One theme that caught my attention was that of 'dependence'.
Before Gregor turned into an insect, he was an independent man, supporting his (dependent) family.
However, after the transformation, the positions were switched 180 degrees, now, he could not live without the support of his family.
Focusing on the independent status of Gregor,
perhaps the author wanted to glorify those who are independent, perhaps Kafka himself might have held an independent position in society.
Kafka carried this out using a rather paradoxical method.
Namely, he turned Gregor into an insect and simulated what would happen if an independent person suddenly dissapeared?
How would the dependent people react?
Oh the family suddenly goes into a financial crisis and the father can no longer laze around in the house and fine work,
the mother remembers the good old days when there was a stable income brought by her son.
So the family appreciates the good old days, the presence of their independent son.
But gradually, the family goes into the process of transformation as well, becoming more and more independent.
Hence, perhaps Kafka wanted to tell the reader to grow up and stand on your own feet and become independent.
And perhaps to those who are already independent, they can back out a little (by turning into an insect),
and grow the others surrounding him or her.
