今日は日本語が話せるドライバーを雇って、
北京郊外の観光地を見て回った。
このハイヤーサービスは車一台８時間で９５０元（約12,000円）とリーゾナブルだ。
ドライバーは「チョウ《さんという、
長身の中国人で流暢な日本語を話す人だった。
万里の長城までは、北京市内から車で北西に約１時間。
７時半に出発したので、８時半には到着した。
今日の天気は晴天で、珍しく（？）青空も見えた。
さて、万里の長城と言っても、
一つではなくて、至る所に遺跡として散在しており、
今日は比較的整備され観光客が良く訪れるという「八達嶺長城《に行った。
長城まではこの恐るべしロープウェイを使っていく。
Today, we did sightseeing in the outskirts of Beijing with a car
which we hired with a driver who could speak Japanese.
This car hire service is a popular way of getting around Beijing
and is reasonably priced too (950 yuan for 8 hours).
Our driver's name was Mr. Chou,
he was a really tall guy and his Japanese was very fluent.
It takes about an hour to the Great Wall from the city centre of Beijing.
Leaving the apartment at half past seven, we arrived at around half past eight.
The sky was blue and the weather was pleasant.
Well, speaking about this Great Wall,
it's not just one big wall, but you find them in many parts across China.
Today we visited the Badaling Great Wall,
a place where a lot of tourist visit.
We took this horrific cable car to the Wall.
恐るべしというのも、
このロープウェイ、窓が閉まらない。
風であおられ揺れるわ、
乗る時も降りる時も係員はおらず完全にセルフサービスだ。
かなりスリリングな体験だった。
高所恐怖症の人はまず無理だろう。
It was horrific because,
the door doesn't shut properly to start with.
And the wind makes the car to swing side ways.
And it's completely self-service.
It sure was a thrilling experience,
if you're acrophobic, I advise to walk up or go to a different Wall.
あとでチョウサンも言っていたが、
今日は正月にしては珍しく、ものすごい数の観光客だったらしく、
長城の上は人で大混雑だった。
そして、とにかく寒い。
Mr Chou was later saying,
today there was unusually large number of tourists.
The pathway on the Wall was packed with people
and it was quite frustrating.
And it was cold too.
しかし、わたくしは、この日のために、
非常に手の込んだ防寒対策を練っていたのだ。
上半身には、ヒートテックの上にタートルネックを着て、
その上にさらに暖かなスコットランド産の漁師用のセーターを着込んで、
更にその上にダウンジャケットを着て、極め付けにホッカイロを貼る。
下はユニクロのヒートテックに、パジャマを着て、
さらにその上にズボンを着たので、
まるで歩くこたつだ。
そして、極め付けは頭に装着したネックウォーマーだ。
ネックウォーマーを首に敢えて巻かない所がコツだ。
頭に巻くことで、耳が暖かいし、
暖かいばかりか、人混みの中で良い目印となる。
プロの旅行家は常に機能性も配慮するのだ。
但し、ファッション性に関しては若干欠ける所があることは認めざるを得ない。
But you know,
I was well prepared for this cold.
I was wearing a heat-tech T-shirt, a turtle neck jumper,
and a Scottish fisherman sweater and a down jacket.
And under my trousers I was wearing a pajama and heat-tech tights.
Also, I wore a neckwarmer on my head to keep my ears warm.
I was a walking radiator.
This neckwarmer (or a headwarmer, if you like) was useful for another purpose -
it was easy to spot in the crowd of people.
You see, a professional tourist takes extra care about the functionality,
but he doesn't always excel at the fashion front.
果てしなく続く長城の景色は圧巻だった。
長城の長さななんと約９千キロ。
二千年かけて、建設されたというから、本当にスケールが違う。
The view of the Great Wall was really spectacular.
They say that the total lengh of the Wall (combined together) is 9,000km,
and built over 2,000 years!
万里の長城の後は、明朝の皇族のお墓があるという、
明十三稜（みんじゅうさんりょう）に行く。
ここも２００３年に世界遺産に登録されている。
但し、チョウさんによると、
北京の世界遺産の中では最もつまらない所らしい。
今回は時間があまりなかったので、
公開されている三つのお墓の内の一つの
「神路《という所を歩いた。
チョウさん曰く「ただの道《だが、
個人的にはなかなか綺麗な場所で良かった。
After the Wall,v we went to the Imperial Tombs of the Ming Dynast
y. It's another world heritage site.
According to Mr. Chou, this is the most boring world heritage site in Beijing.
But it was a really peaceful place (especially after the flood of people at the Wall),
and I liked it very much.
ここには、動物の彫刻が左右にたくさん並んでいる。
意味は良く分からない。
You see, you find these sculptures of animals on the side,
I wasn't sure what they indicate...
その後、昼食をマクドナルドで食べ、
（このマックも色々な意味で凄かったのだが、ここでは敢えて割愛しよう）
これまた世界遺産である頤和園（いわえん）を訪れる。
We had chiken burgers at McDonalds.
(there's an anecdote to tell about this McDonalds, but I shall not get into that here)
Then we went to the Summer Palace (or Yihe yuan), another world heritage site.
ここは、北京最大の皇族の庭園で、
面積は290万平方メートルと巨大だ。
北口から歩き始めて、
特に目的も当てもなく、歩いた。
後でガイドブックを見ると、
相当、目的も当てもなかったことに気がついた。
やはり、旅行をする上である程度の準備は必要だ。
This is the largest imperial garden in Beijing,
spanning over 290,000 square meters.
We walked from the north entrance
without knowing where or what to see.
When I later read about this place in the guidebook,
I learnt that we have really walked without knowing where or what to see,
as we seemed to have missed some important places to see.
Preparation is very important when travelling.
ある場所で、
地図を指して、「昆明湖はどこですか？《と
英語が話せそうな若い係の男性に尋ねると、
今年一番のジョークを聞いたかのように、
物凄い大きな声で笑い出したかと思うと、
「湖はないよ！《と一言。
どうも湖は冬だから凍っており、
その湖を探している僕が可笑しかったようだが、
そこまで面白いかと思った。
中国人の笑いのツボは面白い所にある。
At one place,
I asked this guy, who was on duty to help the tourist,
where the lake was (pointing at my map).
Then he bursted laughing like crazy as if I just told him the funniest joke this year or something.
Then he goes, "there's no lake".
He was trying to say that there was no lake as it was freezing,
but I wondered what was so funny about that.
Chinese people have funny laughing points.
帰りの車の中から、
北京オリンピックのメイン会場の「鳥の巣《スタジアムが見えた。
We saw the Birds Nest, the main stadium during the Beijing Olympics.
夜は連日の中華料理で胃がもたれるリスクに晒されていたので、
日本食レストランに行った。
We had Japanese food for dinner,
as the Chinese food was getting little heavy in our stomach.
ラーメンを注文した。
ネギラーメンはなかなかうまかった。
I ordered a ramen,
it was good.
食後、父親が住んでいる所の真向かいにあるショッピングモール内にある
スーパーに行く。
僕はここでお土産にお茶をいくつか買った。
After dinner, we went to a supermarket inside of the mall near my dad's apartment.
I bought some tea for souvenir.
