月末に入り、少々仕事量が増えてきたので、１９時まで「残業」した。
日本で働いていると、夜７時なんて残業の部類に入らないのだろう。
最近はイギリスでも、会社によっては７・８時頃までは働くと聞く。
要は、僕の会社が異常なんだ。
４時あたりからすでに帰り始める人がいて、５時過ぎには、オフィスはすっからかんだ。
まして、７時まで残っていると、かなり「頑張り屋さん」の部類に入る。
「皆が５時に帰ってビジネスが成り立つのか」と聞かれると、
イギリス人は成り立っていると言うけれど、僕は成り立っていないと思う。
事実、メールの返事が帰ってくるまで幾日もかかるし、
やることが山積していて、人によってはいつもパニック状態にいる。
イギリスの病院の待ち時間が、何ヶ月と異常に長いのも、開院時間が短いのが原因だとある雑誌で読んだ。
ようは、あと２−３時間伸ばせばいいんだ。と僕は思う。
７時までいると、しょっちゅう、警備員が見回りにきて、
「早く帰りなさい」といった感じの視線を投げかけてくる。
そんな社風は嫌いではないけれど、
こんな社風に慣れてしまったら、日本で働くことは絶対にできない。
外国で働くという選択はあるけれど、
念のため、「忙しい」とは決して言わないようにしている。
It is month-end and since my workload has increased by a little bit, I worked 'overtime', until seven.
If I was in Japan, I know that seven will not be even considered as overtime.
Even in UK, I hear that a lot of people in other companies work until seven or eight these days.
Namely, it is this company which is peculiar.
People will start to go home from four, and by half past five, the office will become nearly empty.
If you were working until seven, you'll be considered as 'hard working'.
'Is a business sustainable, when everybody goes home so early?' you may ask.
Surely, there are many ways of looking at it, but I say no, it isn't.
The fact that it takes several days to get a reply to an e-mail supports my view.
I read in one journal, that the reason why the NHS's queuing time is so long is because of the hospitals' short opening times.
All they have to do is work few hours longer, well, I think so.
When I work until seven, the guards frequently come around and give me a 'hurry-up-and-go-home' kind of look.
I don't hate such a corporate culture,
but if I get used to such a culture, I would never be able to work in Japan.
I do have a choice to work abroad,
but I told myself not to say 'busy',
just in case.
