僕が住む寮Vauxhall Houseのすぐ外に、池がある。
最近は暖かくなってきたので、池辺にあるベンチに座って
勉強の息抜きに読書をする。
今日は、父が送ってくれた動物写真家岩合さんの本を読んだ。
自慢になってしまうが、
この本の内表紙の所に、「To Maki san, with best wishes」と猫の絵入りの直筆サインが書かれている。
日本を代表する動物写真家に to maki san と書かれて、うれしくないわけがない。
写真家というキャリアはどうなのだろうか。
絵描きと同様、そんな甘い世界ではないというのは百も承知ではあるが、
岩合さんのように、世界中を飛び回って、
好きな猫の写真やアフリカや北極の動物の写真を撮るのは、かなり生きがいを感じられる仕事のような気がする。
僕は写真を撮ることは好きであるが、僕の撮る写真はスナップ写真の域を超えていないと自覚している。
プロとアマチュアの間には、「人生をかけられるか」という高い壁があるような気がする。
明確なテーマが定まれば、
いつか、壁の向こう側にいきたい。
There's a lake just outside of my flat.
When it's warm, I sit on a bench just by the lake and read a book for a while.
Today, I was reading a book by Mitsuaki Iwago, a Japanese animal photographer.
I hate to boast, but on the inside cover of this book, there's his autograph, addressed "To Maki, with best wishes".
Mr Iwago is one of the most renowned photographers in Japan, so it's difficult not to smile everytime I open this book.
I was thinking about a career in photography.
Like many other artists' career, I know that it's not easy.
But then, it must be a fulfilling job to travel around the world,
like Iwago-san, who travels to Africa to North Pole, taking photos of animals that he loves.
I like taking photos, but I am conscious that all my photos are still within the region of "snap photos".
I feel that there's a big wall between an amateur and a professional photographer,
a wall that divides those who can put one life on the stake and those who cannot.
When I know my theme,
I would like to go over to the other side.
