イギリスの免許証を日本語に翻訳してもらうため、浜松町にある、JAFのオフィスに行ってきた。
とても簡単な翻訳で、10分でできあがった。
これで3000円も取られるのだから、ぼったくりに等しい。
今日もとても良い天気だった。
ちょうどお昼休みのサラリーマンがたくさん歩いていた。
日本は「クール・ビズ」ということで、ノーネクタイの人が多い。
でも、「クール・ビズ」っていう名前はクールでなくて、むしろダサいな。
今日は特に予定がなかったのでJAFの近くのコーヒー屋でしばし休憩。
高校時代のOno君にメールをし、夕方新宿で会うことにした。
それまで、時間が大分あったので、街を歩き回ることにした。

To get a Japanese driving license, I have to translate my English driving licence into Japanese.
So, I went to JAF's office in Hamamatsu-chou (south of Tokyo).
JAF stands for Japanese Automobile Federation, which sounds a bit grim.
I don't understand why I have to translate an English license,
I thought English was a global language, surely, everybody can read the basic English such as
"date", "valid until".
The translation took measely 10 minutes (not surprising) and they charged me 3000 yen, which is a total rip off.
It was another beautiful summer day.
It was just about lunch time and there were many "salary men" walking about for lunch.
Nowadays, a lot of companies don't require employees to wear ties during summer,
this policy is known as "cool biz" (probably meaning cool business).
I think the idea is cool, but the name is a bit naff...
I didn't have any particular plan today, so while I was resting in a cafe near JAF,
I emailed Ono and we decided to meet up in the evening.
Below picture was taken near Hamamatsu-chou station,
it is known as Venice in Japan (what? you think I'm joking?).

Below is the famous something shrine and the tower is called the Tokyo Tower.
The Eiffel Tower was designed from this Tokyo Tower.
Or some say, it's the opposite...
日本には歩道橋というのがある。
There are many of these road briges in Tokyo., perhaps to maintain the flow of traffic.

東京は意外に公園が多い。
蝉が鼓膜が破れるほどの大きさで鳴いている。
日本の夏は夏らしく暑くて、好きだ。
やはり夏は暑くなくっちゃね。
There are surprisingly large number of parks in Tokyo.
During summer, the sound of cicadas will almost rip your eardrums.
But this is Japanese summer, I sure missed it.
Summer should be hot.
見張り台の中は暑そうだな。ご苦労様です。
I felt sorry for that policeman in the watch tower.
It's got to be so hot in there...
地下通路を歩いたら、あらびっくり。落書きがない！
東京は意外と綺麗な街だな。
これまで思ってた東京のイメージが随時崩れていく。
When I got down to this underground path, I was surprised to see no grafittis...
Tokyo is a clean city, there are no cigarret buds either.
My preconceptions about Tokyo have gradually eroded.

このあたりで、僕はようやく自分が迷子になっているという事実に気が付いた。
紀の国坂ってのは、有名そうな坂だけれど、
地図がないので困った。
世界の他の町のように、ぶらぶらと歩けばそのうちどこかの地下鉄駅に辿りつくだろうと思っていたのだが、
東京は意外に大きな街で、歩けど歩けど、駅がない。
This is where I realised that my current location was unidentifiable,
in another words, I got lost.
This got to be a famous sign,
but no use if you haven't got a map.
You need a map in Tokyo (just for your information).
しばらく北へ歩き続けるとようやく四ツ谷駅に辿りついた。
上智大学はこんな所にあるのかと感心。
Ono君との待ち合わせ時間が近づいていたので
ここから山手線で新宿まで乗った。
I was so relieved when I finally found this station.
Ironically, it was my brother's university station.
新宿の待ち合わせ場所の定番といえば、アルタ前。
ここで、4年振りにOno君と再会。
The typical meeting point in Shinjuku is the square in front of Studio Alta,
where they broadcast Waratte IItomo, a famous Japanese lunch-time TV programme.
I met Ono here, it has been four years...
日本の街は看板だらけだ。
街の景観なんてまったく考えられていない。
まあ、考えようによっては、これが東京らしさ、日本らしさなのだろうか。
So many store signs in Tokyo.
There must be no such thing as planning permissions in Japan.
相変わらずのOno君。
理系の一流大学の大学院に通っている彼に
「今はどんなことを研究しているのか」と聞くと、
「はしごをイメージしてください」
って所からはじまって、
超伝導がなんたらこうたら、
磁石のベクトルがなんたらこうたら、
アインシュタインのなんとか理論がなんたらこうたら、
と、もはや意味不明の領域に達していた。
就職も無事決まったようで、おめでとうございます。
高校時代の人達が今何をやっているかという話題になった。
だれだれ君とだれだれさんが結婚したと言っても、
何せ6年前のことで、名前と顔が一致しない。
どういう感じの人だか表現してもらっても、Ono君の説明は
「ほら、バッグの紐の色が黒い人で」
と相変わらず説明するのが苦手な彼であった。
結局、マジメ系かちゃらちゃら系かと、単純な説明方法になった。
Ono has not changed.
He is currently studying in one of the most prestegious universities in Tokyo.
I asked him what he's researching currently, and he goes
"If you can image a ladder"....
Which I barely manage to do, then he continued saying something about superconductive blablabla
the vector of magnet blablabla and Einstein's famous theory of something blablabla.
He has gone somewhere beyond my understanding....
So I changed the topic into our highschool days,
you know, who's doing what and who is working at where and so and so.
But, you know, it's been six years since I graduated from highschool,
so Ono told me who has married to whom and blablabla,
I cannot match the names with the correct faces.
And Ono is still so bad with explaining things - I asked him "can you describe what she/he used to look like?",
but the only explanation he could give was
"well, he used to carry around a bag that had a black strap", I was like, thanks!
So, we ended up standardising our explanation process into whether he/she used to be a "serious" type or the "gang-like" type.
同じ東京なので、Ono君とはまた会うでしょう。
Well, I shall see him again sometime, as he lives in Tokyo.
お盆なので、電車も空いていた。
The train back home wasn't bad,
it's the Obon season (holiday season).
