今日から2泊3日でサムと大阪・京都の旅に出てくる。
東京駅発、朝9時過ぎの新幹線に乗る。
「ずっと外を眺めていると、気持ち悪くなるよ」と、凄い早さで移り変わる車窓からの風景を眺めながら、サムが言っていた。
確かに東京―大阪間の新幹線から見える風景は、イギリスの田舎景色とは違い、家屋やトンネルが多く、眺めていてもあまり面白くなかった。
定刻通り、新幹線は11時５９分に到着した。
ここら辺は日本が誇る鉄道システムの素晴らしさだ。
到着し、Yusukeと1時過ぎに待ち合わせた。
このYusuke,先週の土曜日に日本に帰国したばかりだ。
それなのに、昨夜はさっそく大阪の友人達とオールナイトのカラオケにいったらしく、そのため少し疲れ気味のようだった。
今日から3日間、彼がサムと僕を大阪と京都を案内してくれるので、とても有難い。
We'll be touring around the Kansai area (western part of Japan where Osaka and Kyoto is located) from today with Sam.
We got on a shinkansen (a bullet train) at around nine.
I haven't gone on the shinkansen since I was a child, so I was quite excited.
"It makes me want to throw up" said Sam, looking out at the rapidly changing sceneries from the train window
That is true I thought, different from the beautiful English country side,
the views from the Japanese train window is a rather boring one; they are either constantly changing view of the houses
or the train is inside the pitch-dark tunnels.
I miss the English countryside in a way.
The train arrived as scheduled at 11:59 at Shin-Osaka station.
We met Yusuke at sometime after 1pm at Shin-sai-bashi station.
This Yusuke, have only come back to Japan last Saturday, however, he has already been to all-night Karaoke and for that reason,
he seemed very tired.
Yusuke will be showing us around Osaka and Kyoto from today, so I'm really thankful for that one.
三角公園というところで、たこ焼を買いサムと二人で食べる。
ポン酢がかかったたこ焼きは初めて食べたな。
意外とあっさりとしていて美味しかった。
We had lunch at a place called the Triangle Park, which according to Yusuke is supposed to be a famous chilling out area in this area of Osaka.
We tried a very famous Osaka food called Takoyaki, which directly translated means "cooked Octopus".
The green stuff on top is a type of small leek.
Sam had it with Japanese brown sauce, I ate it with ponzu, which is a type of vinegar.
It was very nice and quite light on your stomach.
三角公園で、Yusukeが大阪の素晴らしさをかなりアピールしていた。
彼は大阪の食文化が日本一であると断定した。
彼によると、それは昔日本は階級社会で、
中でも大阪は商人がたくさんいて、
彼らは洋服などの高級品にお金を使うのは贅沢だとみなされていたので、かわりに食べ物にお金を使い、こうして食文化が発達したらしい。
彼はA型なので、本当はもっとかなり細かい説明だっただが、細かすぎで詳細は忘れてしまった。
いづれにしろ、三角公園で彼が行った大阪の食文化ナンバー・ワンのスピーチはかなり説得力のあるもので、
東京出身の僕も、美味しいたこ焼を食べながらつい納得させられてしまった。
今回大阪にきたのは初めてだったので、僕はこの街に対してたくさんの偏見をもっている。
どうやら、Yusukeは僕のそれを崩したいらしかった。
In this Triangle Park, Yusuke made a speech about how wonderful the city of Osaka is (obviously Yusuke is from Osaka).
He asserted that the food in Osaka is the best in Japan.
Well, according to him, in the old times, Japan used to have a strict class system,
divided into by the types of occupation that one had, such as a worrior (or samurais), politicians, and the in the very lower level were the merchants.
The society at that period regarded that merchants should not spend too much money on luxurious goods, such as clothes,
so instead, merchants spend their most of the money on foods.
Naturally, there were many merchants in Osaka and they developed a very rich food culture.
Of course, Yusuke's blood type being "A", his speech was far more detailed so I don't remember what he exactly said, but I think that is the summary.
Anyway, his speech was quite a persuasive one and with takoyakis in my mouth,
I was "almost" admitted that Osaka has the best food cultre in Japan.
I am from Tokyo, so I guess I have this stereotype towards the kansai people,
which was the very thing that Yusuke wanted to take away.
三角公園から歩いて、心斎橋がある道頓堀に行く。
このグリコの看板は有名だ。
心斎橋には柵が作られていた。
どうやら、阪神ファンが川へ飛び込むらしい。
さすが大阪人だ。
From the triangle park, we walked towards the very famous Shinsai-bashi (bashi means bridge in Japanese).
Glico's massive advertisement board is quite a famous one (one with the man holding out his hands up).
When we got there, there was a barrier built in both sides of the bridge,
which was apparantly to prevent the Hanshin Tigers (a base ball team) fans jumping off into the river.
この巨大カニも有名だ。
何の看板かと思えば、寿司屋の看板だった。
世界陸上が現在大阪で行われているため、「日本がんばれ」と書かれていた。
This crab is quite famous too,.
Well, it's again an advertisement board for a sushi shop.
On its body, it was written "Ganbare Nippon (All the best Japan)",
as the World Track and Field is currently taking place in Osaka.
「あれ有名っすよ、くいだおれ人形。マキさん知らないんすかー」
とYusukeに言われてしまった。知りませんでした。
しかし、この何が凄いんだ？何故有名なんだ？
渋谷のハチ公は、「飼い主を待っている」という、感動的なドラマがある故有名なのに、
この眼鏡のおっさんは、ただ太鼓をぽこぽこ叩いているだけじゃないか。
まったく、大阪人の感性というのはいかなものか。
"that man is Kuidaore Ningyou, don't you know?", said Yusuke, making it sound quite unbelievable that I didn't know this weird man.
Well, again this is an advertisement object for one of the shops.
But why is it so famous I wonder...
Perhaps it represents the cultre of Osaka, as "kuidaore" means "eat until financially/physically bankrupt".
しかし、この道頓堀のパワーは凄いものがあった。
お好み焼きを食べたかったが、ちょっと時間がなかった。
東京に帰る前にぜひ食べたいものだ。
The streets in Osaka was quite powerful though.
I wanted to eat okonomiyaki, but didn't have time today.
再び、意味が分からないオブジェ。
どうやら、有名なお笑い芸人らしい。
しかしサムも僕も知らないので、やる気なさそうに写ってしまった。
Again, some random object.
He is supposed to be a famous comedian, but as we both don't know him,
we look very disinterested in this photo.
午後3時頃から、サムの友人のRoryにOCATというビルの横にある、カフェで会う。
Roryは現在NOVAで英語の先生として働いているらしい。
かれこれ10ヶ月ぐらい日本に住んでいるらしく、なかなか日本をエンジョイしているらしかった。
日本語も自分でかなり一生懸命勉強していたので、感心させられた。
From around three, Sam met his English friend Rory in the cafe near OCAT building.
Rory is currently working for NOVA as an English teacher.
He's been in Osaka for about ten months already and seems enjoying his life here.
His Japanese was pretty good too; I was impressed how he has been teaching himself Japanese.
電車に乗り、大阪城の近くで降りる。

We got on a train to a station near Osaka Castle.

We paid some money to have Yusuke wear the samurai protectors and take photos.
切腹を演じるYusuke。
デジカメで撮った写真をみせたら、「ちゃんと足が写ってないじゃないですかー」と文句言われた。
すんませんでした。
He goes, "seppuku", used to be samurais' way of ending his life when he had no escape.
I showed him the photos I took and he goes,
"my legs are not shown" complaining.
oops sorry.
I told you his blood type is A.
晩飯には、韓国人が多い地域であるという京橋に行く。
Yusukeがイギリスで知り合った友人Jeremyとその彼女と一緒に焼肉を食べた。
サムが、自分のテーブルで焼くスタイルに驚いて、
「これがイギリスだったら、絶対誰か火傷をしたとかで訴える人がいると思うな」と言っていた。
確かに欧米は日本に比べると、訴訟社会だが、
欧米ではバーベキューを庭とかでやるので、
意外とヒットになったりするかもしれない。
In the evening, we went to Kyoubashi to have dinner.
Yusuke introduced us his friends Jeremy and his girl-friend.
We had "Yakiniku", which literally means "cooked meat".
Sam was surprised with this rather crude way of serving the food,
as each customer is required to cook their own meat (it's like a mini barbecue in a restaurant).
Sam was saying "if this was in England, people would start to sue the restaurant".
That is true I thought.
But it is also true that the western countries do barbecues quite often during summer,
so it might become a hit once introduced.
サムは小食なためあまりたべていなかったが、ウィンナーはうまそうに食べていた。
We were cooking rather exotic meat, so Sam was very relieved to eat a familiar sausage.
晩御飯を食べた後、京阪線のK特急で京都へ行く。
予約を入れておいた民宿は、四条駅からすぐのところで、落ち着いた良い感じの所だった。
果たして、畳に布団でサムは寝れるのか？
と少し思ったが、やはりどうせ日本にきたのだからホテルばかりではなくて、こうした日本らしい所に泊まるのも悪くないと思う。
After dinner, me and Sam took the train to Kyoto.
The minshuku (a type of Japanese B&B, only that this minshuku didn't have breakfast included) that I booked was quite a nice one.
I wondered if Sam would be able to sleep on tatamis and on futon.
But I thought it would be a nice experience for him to sleep in this Japanese style hotel for couple of days.
