朝8時半に起きる。
朝食がついていない民宿だったので、すぐ外へ出て、どこか食べるとところを探す。
当てもなく歩いていると、京都の古い町並みが次々と目に入る。
We woke up at eight thirty.
We went out to have breakfast somewhere.
We walked without knowing where to go, looking at the beautiful Kyoto architectures along the way.
教会の友人お勧めのイノダコーヒーという所へ行こうとしたのだが、
京都は道が複雑で、道に名前もついていないので、方向感覚が分からず、
朝飯は結局コンビニになってしまった。
再び歩き出し、ふと気がつくと、全く方向の八坂神社だった。
We wanted to go to Inoda Cafe, which was the place recommended by one of my friends at church,
but since Kyoto does not have names on the streets, we (or rather I with the map) kind of lost sense of direction
and ended up buying breakfast at a convenient store and eating it by the river.
After breakfast, we walked again, and when we realised, we were in Yasaka shrine.
八坂神社から円山公園付近を歩き、そこから清水寺へ向かった。
From Yasaka shrine, we walked through the Maruyama Park and went to Kiyomizu Temple from there.
Hmmmm, nice steps.

清水寺の近くで、生八橋をおみやげに買う。
サムも買っていた。
意外に彼は餡子が好きらしい。
I bought Namayatsu-hashi (famous Kyoto desserts) for my mom.
Sam bought it too.
Sam seems to like anko ("azuki" bean-paste).
清水寺でYusukeと待ち合わせ、一緒にお寺を見学する。
We met up with Yusuke again at Kiyomizu Temple.
弁慶が実際に振りかざしていた棍棒を持ち上げようとする二人。
小さい方は持ち上がるが、大きいのは無理だ。
This massive weapon was used by Benkei, a famous worrior.
We managed to lift up the small one, but not the big one.
Yusuke, next to the beautiful nature.
Yusukeが清水寺の滝の水を飲んで、
「どんな味だった？」とサムが聞く。
「素晴らしい味だったよ」とYusuke。
「どんな風に？鉄のコップの味がしたでしょ？」とサム。
「いや、水道水の味がしたよ」とYusuke。
Kiyomizu-Temple means "pure water temple".
And this place below is where you can actually drink the water.
Yusuke queued up and tried the water.
"How was the taste?" asked Sam.
"Taste awesome" anwered Yusuke.
"(tasted) like metal?" goes Sam, reffering to the metal cup that Yusuke drank from.
In reply to this, Yusuke goes "No, like tap water"
時間がなかったので、清水寺からタクシーに乗り、金閣寺へ向かう。
タクシーのおっちゃんが色々と京都のことを教えてくれた。
京都にも昔路面電車が走っていたことや、街の古い景観を維持するため、建物に４０ｍ規制がかかっていること、
季節によって入ることのできる寺が変わることなどなど。
As we didn't have much time, we hopped on a cab from Kiyomizu-temple to Kinkakuji (Golden Pavilion).
Yusuke was talking with the taxi driver and he taught us many things about Kyoto,
such as about the fact there used to be trams running in Kyoto,
and about the "40 meter rule" to preserve the city sceneries.
金閣寺はぴっかぴかだった。
ピッカピカな故、あまり趣がないと思っていたのは僕だけでなくYusukeもだった。
やはり質素な銀閣寺のほうが僕は好きだな。
Kinkaku-ji was nice and shiny.
Perhaps a little too nice and shiny.
I prefer the more humble style of Ginkakuji (Silver Pavilion), but we didn't have time to visit it this time.
サムがカルピスを飲む。
このカルピス、日本を訪れる外国人では一躍有名だ。
理由はその名前にある。
聞きようによっては、カウピス（牛の小便）と聞こえてしまう。
日本の商品名はこういうおかしなものが多い。

Don't take me wrong, not Cow Piss, but it's called Calpis.
A lot of foreingers laugh at this drink for its rather misguiding name.
There are so many of these brand names that sound stupid in Japan.
金閣寺から近くにある竜安寺まで徒歩で行く。
モネの絵にでてくるような、ジャパニーズガーデンと橋があった。
From Kinkaku-ji, we walked to Ryouan-ji.
This pond looked like Monet's Japanese garden with its Japanese bridge.
日は照っていなかったのだが、湿気が多くて暑かった。
The sun was covered by the clouds, but it was still very humid and hot.
竜安寺には石庭がある。
黙想して置かれた石がそれぞれ何を象徴しているか考えましょうと書いてあった。
There is this stone garden in Ryouanji.
We were supposed to meditate and think what those stones represents.
竜安寺の縁側でしばし休憩。
Sam resting in the garden.
竜安寺から任和寺へいったが、すでに閉まっていた。
再び、しばし休憩。
From Ryouanji, we walked to Ninnaji, but it was already closed.
Hence, we bought some drinks from the vending machine and rested some more.
晩飯は四条駅付近で食べることにした。
せっかくなら京都料理が食べたかったが、どこにあるか分からない。
We went back to Shijou station area and looked for some place to eat.
Of course, it would have been best to eat some genuine Kyoto cuisine, but we couldn't find any.
ふとカラオケ・ボックスの前を過ぎ、日本の文化の一つである、カラオケをサムに体験させてあげることにした。
イギリスにもカラオケたるものがあるが、それはパブの中にあり、大勢の前で歌うスタイルだ。
よって、こうした個室の中、ハイテク機器を使ってのカラオケはサムは初めて。
晩飯を食べ、ビールを飲みながら歌う。
Instead, me and Yusuke decided to introduce to Sam a yet another Japanese culture - Karaoke.
There are karaokes in the UK too, but the style is a little different in Japan.
As opposed to "singing in front of the crowds of people in the pub" style in the UK,
in Japan we sit inside the private room and get to sing all we want with small number of people.
We ordered our food and drinks and started singing.
面白いことに、サムが一番熱唱していた。
どうやら彼は歌うのが好きらしかった。
Yusukeもたくさん英語の曲を歌っていたが、途中で
「もう持ちネタがつきましたー！」
I wasn't sure whether Sam would like this Japanese karaoke,
but actually,
he was the one who was singing the most, he was singing like crazy! (well, in tune of course).
Yusuke sang some English songs too, but soon he ran out of his stock!
I thought it reflected his inner feeling when he sang
"Englishman in New York" by Sting.
Sam was singing some random songs like "Kung-hoo Fighting".
最後までサムはマイクを握っていた。
Yusuke, having drank couple of pints of beer, fell into asleep, as usual.
