ヘンリー・ジェームズのThe Americanを読んだ。
知的好奇心をそそるような本ではないけれど、
僕が今まで読んだ本の中で最も「おもしろい」部類の本の一つだ。
面白いといっても、話は非常に洗練されていて、登場人物一人一人に大きなテーマが割り当てられていた。
話の終わりはとても心を暖められると同時に悲しかった。
話は、クリストファー・ニューマンという億万長者のアメリカ人がフランスへ「アートや音楽などを勉強するため」来て、
そこでクレア・ベラガルデというフランス貴族の女性に恋をしてしまう話。
しかし単なる恋愛物語ではなく、プロットはとても良く絡み合っていて、
キリスト教的な思考もちりばめられていた。
１３０年前に書かれた本ではあるが、ヘンリージェームズの文体は昨日かかれたと言ってもおかしくないぐらい、
モダンで読みやすかった。
Read a novel by Henry James called 'The American'.
It was not the sort that is intelectually stimulating,
but I must praise this book by saying that it was one of the most 'entertaining' novel I have read,
entertaining, but yet, leaving a feeling of sorrow and warmth in my heart and how Henry James finished this novel was almost artistic.
The story is about an American called Christopher Newman,a highly successful business man,
who comes over to France for entertainment, and perhaps self-enlightmenent.
Despite this initial motive, he, as one expect, falls in love with a beautiful woman Claire de Bellegarde, a member of the French aristocrat.
You might think, perhaps, that this is a simple love story, but the plot is very well intertwined and sophisticated,
and there are some, I believe, Christian belief contained as well.
The book was written almost 130 years ago but Henry James' writing style is such that, it seems as though it was written yesterday,
very modern and interesting.
